International Housekeeping Week!

Anyone in the hotel industry will tell you some of the hardest-working individuals in a hotel are the housekeeping staff. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were an estimated 771,390 housekeepers across the U.S. as of May 2022. Without them, you wouldn’t be able to keep up with the demand, book your rooms to capacity, and maximize revenue, which ultimately impacts the overall success of your hotel.

The 2nd full week of September is a special time to celebrate the work your housekeeping staff does – it’s International Housekeeping Week! During this week, take some time and thank your housekeeping team. Need some ideas? From the Desk of the Dean: Season 3!

As a leader at your hotel, you face new challenges daily. With time, through trial and error, you’ll find ways to overcome those challenges. However, we want to help make your leadership journey just a little bit easier. The good news is that other leaders have faced similar situations and lived to tell the tale!

You don’t have to muddle through on your own! We’ve put together a video series just for leaders, called From the Desk of the Dean, to share leadership lessons based on real-life experiences.

In each short video (each fewer than 5 minutes!), I share the mistakes I’ve made as a leader as well as my more successful leadership moments. To give you a different perspective, I sometimes invite my colleagues from across Choice to share their experiences. Most importantly, we share all the lessons that go along with learning from these successes and failures. After each video, I recommend reflecting on the situation and lessons learned and deciding how you might implement the key takeaways.

While we finish recording our next season of lessons, expected to launch at the end of September, why don’t you check out a few of my favorite lessons from past seasons? I’d suggest my series on feedback: “The Gift of Feedback”, “Receiving Feedback as a Leader”, and “Creating an Atmosphere of Ongoing Feedback”.
