Looking for that next touchdown?
With football season kicking off, let’s borrow some winning plays for the hotel industry. Just like on the field, success often comes down to fundamentals. So, team, it’s time to BLOCK & TACKLE: focus on the basics that drive guest satisfaction and operational excellence.
With the summer peak season in the rearview mirror, now is the perfect opportunity to huddle up, reset, and get back to hospitality essentials that sometimes get overlooked in the rush.

“… success often comes down to fundamentals.”
Hospitality Plays That Put You in the End Zone
- Meet and greet within 10 feet. Just as a defense always has eyes on the quarterback, your team should keep eyes on the guest. Anytime you’re within 10 feet, smile and make eye contact.
- On the field = on stage. Whenever a guest is present, you’re representing the hotel. Be mindful of actions, tone, and words in all public spaces.
- Have a YES culture. A running back doesn’t say “no” when handed the ball—your team shouldn’t either. Instead of “That’s not my job,” try:
“Let me see how I can assist” or “I’ll find the answer and follow up.” - Words matter. Swap out casual responses like “no problem” with service-minded ones like “My pleasure” or “Absolutely, I’d be happy to help.”
- Use guest names. Just like a coach connects with players personally, use guest names whenever possible. It builds trust and shows respect.
- Upgrade the front desk greeting. Replace “Checking in?” with “Welcome to [hotel name]! How may I assist you today?” And instead of “Checking out?” ask, “How was your stay with us?”

Looking Ahead
Now is also a great time to start goal-setting for 2026. Involve your team in the process—give them a peek into the “locker room” by inviting input, encouraging idea-sharing, and empowering them to take ownership of both guest experience and their own development.
