What Hotel Owners Need to Know in 2025
Big changes in Washington mean big implications for hotel owners. In a recent ChoiceU TALKS session, industry leaders Rolf Lundberg (Vice President & Assistant General Counsel, Global Public Policy and External Affairs for Choice Hotels), Chirag Shah (Executive VP, Federal and Political Affairs & Counsel at the American Hotel & Lodging Association), and Sarah Davies (General Counsel at the International Franchise Association) broke down what the new administration and Congress mean for the lodging industry. The good news? The current policy environment is more favorable for business, and our industry is seizing the opportunity to go on offense—educating lawmakers about the franchise model and pushing for pro-business reforms.
ChoiceU Shorts – How can Hotel Owners and Operators Get Involved in Shaping Public Policy?
Among the wins already secured: the defeat of the Overtime Rule and the Joint Employer Rule, both of which posed serious threats to franchise operations. But the work isn’t done. Tax policy is front and center in Congress, with a new bill that could significantly impact small business hotel owners. The panel emphasized the importance of staying alert to issues like tariffs, which can sneak up and disrupt supply chains, and the need for long-term legislative solutions to protect franchising.
So, what can you do? Get involved. The panel urged hotel owners to connect with their elected officials—whether in Congress, the state legislature, or even the mayor’s office. Your voice matters, and lawmakers want to hear from real-world operators like you.

What Public Policy ‘wins’ have AHLA, IFA, and Choice Hotels had in the past year?
